Are you as strong as God? Can
you thunder with a voice like His? All right, put on your glory and
your honour and majesty. Give vent to your anger. Let it overflow
against the proud. Humiliate the proud with a glance; walk on the
wicked where they stand.
Job 40: 9 – 12
It is not difficult to figure out God and His ways, it is impossible! God is so holy, He exist all by Himself. He is God, sovereign. That’s all He is and man would spare himself from a lot of trauma and drama if he accept and submit to this fact. We get caught up in the pursuit of happiness that we forget about the discovering of joy, which is found solely in the Infinite! The Sovereign One has all we need; in Him exist all that is, was and will be.
To learn about how sovereign God is we have to ‘listen’ His Word and the works of His hands. “The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display His craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make Him known.” [Psalm 19: 1 – 2]. By examining creation we see how God’s power is displayed. The more scientific man becomes, the more the intricacies of God are revealed. “To whom will ye liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be like?” [Isaiah 46: 5]. God is sovereign and there is none like Him.
Read the story of Job. He went through tremendous suffering, and he thought he was not deserving of such harsh testing. In Job 23 he stated that he would love to go before God and ‘fill his mouth with argument’. He wanted to plead his case before God, and he wanted God to explain exactly what was going on. This was his request: To stand before God in a courtroom format, where he and God can dialog. He would speak and God would answer. When God put forth His appearance, Job was speechless. What could he say? Did God answer him? No! All He did was to ask Job a string of questions to which he had no answer. “Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorant words? Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them… Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? …Have you ever commanded the morning to appear and caused the dawn to rise in the east? …Do you realize the extent of the earth? …Have you visited the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of hail? Who created a channel for the torrents of rain? Who laid out the path for the lightning? [Job 38: 2 – 25]. The questions state one thing: God is sovereign! In Job 40 & 41 God talked at length about two wild and powerful creatures which cannot be tamed and live without fear. After noting that no one can confront His two most fearsome beasts, He asked who can stand up to Him. He then declared, “Everything under heaven is mine.” [Job 41: 11]. God is saying that He owns everything and no one can stop Him. Job, who was seemingly prepared to confront God, could only admit to God’s awesomeness: “I had only heard about You before, but now I have seen You with my own eyes. I take back everything I said, and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance.” [Job 42: 5 - 6]. We sometimes get caught up in chasing the perfect lifestyle, the happy home, the fruitful career and status. But what are we doing about the sovereign God? Many men get upset with Him when things they cannot understand happen. But God is accountable to no man for He is sovereign. He declared, “…I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” [Romans 9: 5]. God is sovereign so we must serve Him alone!
God bless you!
