JUNK FOOD E-mail
Written by Khimani A. Williams

I think I can safely say that we all love junk food, right. Am I right? We love the fries, deep fried chicken, the burgers and the pop soda. The truth is that junk food is delicious. It appeals to our thousands of taste buds. But while we are indulging we hardly take time to think of the effects that junk food has on our bodies, only the gratification we receive.

But in reality everyone knows that junk means useless, waste, crap. The same thing can be said of junk food. It is very delicious, but it is not good for us. And we all know of the effects, both the internal and visible ones. Overconsumption of junk food makes people fat, and I don?t mean God Blessed fat; I mean fat where there are too much fat cells in our bodies which can cause obesity. Junk food slowly eats years off our lives. Once we eat it we are affected, some more than others.

Concerning the spiritual, junk food?s effects are similar to what sin do to us. Sin is alluring, at least the ones that appeal to each of us. The effects of sin though is quite more dangerous than those of junk food, for not only is our bodies endangered, but also our spiritual man. The Bible warns us to ??strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress. And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us.? [Hebrews 12: 1]. If we are running with junk it will not be an easy race. We will go through life with guilt and a defeated spirit if we are held bound continuously by a besetting or reoccurring sin.

Is it at all possible to overcome a weakness? Yes! If junk food is the source of obesity, then all the suffering person has to do is to change diet, but this will not be easy as there is some attachment to the junk, an addiction. So if we want to overcome a weakness we have to go to the root of the problem, the thoughts and deeds that cause us to sin. Think about it, ?Can a man take fire in his bosom and his clothes not be burned? Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?? [Proverbs 6: 27 ? 28]. Fire burns. Fire destroys. But what is fire? I would say activities or habits that do not allow us to grow in Christ. Activities such as idling, pornography, prayerlessness, secular music and television programs, gossiping and the like which can be harmful to our spiritual health. If we eat junk it will make us sick and fat and hinder our pace as we try to run the race with patience.

We have to turn to Christ for strength and forgiveness. He is a consuming fire. He will burn all our junk and give us strength to overcome our weaknesses if we are willing to make the necessary sacrifice. No good thing will He ever withhold from us, because we are His and He loves us.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: ?My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when He rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those He loves, and He punishes everyone He accepts as a son." Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?

I mus' say that this article reminds me of an audio I heard from kj52, something
I shared with a few ppl, along the same line. Consuming junk and then being
consumed by junk.

If I may add I think we can also be spiritually obese when we
eat GOD's food and not exercise... U zimmie! As well I wouldn't say secular
music is junk food...but music that doesn't 'edify'. Would say more...but that's
my 2cents...
