TRUST AND OBEY! E-mail

There’s an old hymn song that has been lingering in my mind for some weeks now. It chorus goes: “Trust and obey, there is no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.” I have been thinking on this song and its meaning and it is wonderful what I have found. The result is not what I have made it to be, but what it actually was: That if we are in Jesus Christ, the only way to be happy is to trust and obey His Word! This I have found to be a trustworthy fact and worthy of full acceptance.

In this world God is not the only voice; He is not the only speaker. His Word is secure and fixed (in that His Truth never changes), but there are so many attractive opposing ideas and philosophies rushing by that it becomes so difficult at times to ‘trust and obey’. Everyone wants you to be ‘open-minded’ and ‘understand’ their point of view, even when it is noticeably the direct opposite of what God has required. But we have to learn to be like the Rechabites and not let go off the instructions handed down to us, even when we are being pressured to do so.

In the Book of Jeremiah there were a group of people called the Rechabites who the Lord told Jeremiah the Prophet to invite to the Temple of the Lord and offer them wine. When Jeremiah had them in the Temple he set some wine before them and offered them a drink. Strangely, the Rechabites turned down what seemed to be a generous offer. They then explained that “Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, ‘Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever.’” [Jeremiah 35: 6]. God had commanded Jeremiah to offer the invitation to the Rechabites to show that they have obeyed a command from an ancestor, but Israel His children failed to keep His commandments. [Jeremiah 35: 14].

Are you like the stubborn Israelites or the humble Rechabites? Israel’s wealth and beauty didn’t bring them happiness and the Rechabites’ lowly lifestyle didn’t take away theirs. God honoured the Rechabites for their adherence to Jonadab’s charge, but chastised and sent into captivity Israel and Judah for their disobedience. As children of God, with God’s Law written on our hearts [Hebrews 8: 10], we cannot live as do those who do not know the Lord and is outside of Christ. We have to learn to trust and obey, holding on to our faith in spite of!

So if you are a Christian (accepted Christ and surrendered your life to Him) and you want to be joyful and happy, just choose victory and live a life pleasing unto God who has called us to a life of holiness and not a sinful lifestyle [I Thessalonians 4: 7]. Indeed, we have to learn to trust and obey if we are to be happy in Jesus. There is no other way!

Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honourable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you His Holy Spirit.
I Thessalonians 4: 1 – 8
