Image It was a night fill with excitement as people from all walks of life, the young and aged, made their way up the busy Constant Spring Road to the New Life Gospel Assemblies Church of God for the highly anticipated album launch of Jason Mighty’s “Cornerstone”.

Hosts Nadine Blair of Love 101.7 FM and her male counterpart Markland Edwards got the night started with the introduction of the New Life’s Praise & Worship Team. Following was the first act of the night and new artiste Kevin Smith wasted no time to deliver his single “Back Way”. Next was another new artiste from Dj Nicholas’ camp, J.Lee, who rendered “Mustard Seed”. J.Cee followed and with a powerful introduction and a standing ovation, she commenced her selection. However, the crowd was not finished with her! As the adage, “If it’s nice play it twice”, they called for an encore.
Teena Tamara from Perpetual Praise was next, and she shared her respect and admiration for Jason and dedicated “I Believe” by international pop singer and American Idol 2004 winner Fantasia Barrino.

The night was far from ending as scores of persons filled the aisles and balconies of the church, making movement impossible; nevertheless it stopped no one from receiving their blessing. Many gospel artistes could be seen in the mixture of the crowd up front.  However, the night continued with the next artiste Sheryl Williams from the Cayman Islands who injected a different flavour into the rich bloodstream of the launch. The introduction of Judy Mowatt, a former backup singer for the reggae legend Bob Marley, was heartily received as she opened up an atmosphere of worship with “Thank You Lord”, “Ordinary Servant” and “Lamb Of God”.

The atmosphere was charged as the man of the hour was set to come to the stage. Nicole Mighty, Jason’s wife and manager, gave his biography, then his pastor, Dr. D. Robb announced the plans of ordaining Jason as a music director and a deacon. He then gave the opening prayer for what everyone had come to see. The church lights then dimmed and the smooth voice of Mighty singing the Jamaican National Anthem echoed through GT Sound’s Speakers, but the little man was not seen. The man of the hour then appeared, decked in a black and white suit, escorted by his older brother Calvin ‘Prodigal Son’ Whilby to the stage.

Afterwards it was a praise and worship affair as he and his well harmonized back up singers delivered popular praise choruses such as “Praise Him”, “Be Magnified” and his singles “Wanna Know”, “Angels” and “Fill This Place”. His number one single “Can’t Walk This Life Alone” melted the hearts of many. His testimony was next, highlighted by his fatherless life, constant verbal abuse from his mother and the transformation of his older brother’s life, led him to walk the righteous path (also he took time to introduce his grandmother and sisters later in his set). This was followed by the appearance of Prodigal Son, who shed some light on the relationship he and his brother shared and how he was pleased with his growth in Christ. This led to a mini sermon where Prodigal sang “You Bless Me Too Much”, after which he gave an altar call. The impossible became possible as persons bored their way through the pack aisles to the altar and many raised their hands indicating that they are willing to accept Christ as Saviour. Danny Brownie was next to share his thoughts and encouragement.

Part 2 of the night started and Olecia Weddabourne of Love 101.7 FM invited Mi Phone Dancing Dynamite 2006 runners up, Shady Squad. The excited and creative duo mixed their skills and comedic movements to interpret one of the tracks from the album. After this Jason returned to the stage with the hit “Da Vinci Code”, setting the hype for his next song with Dj Nicholas, “One soul”. They led an army of rag wavers in a holy party as elderly competed with the young. Shady Squad also joined the party. Prodigal Son took the stage again with his brother to deliver track “God Alone We Praise”. However, it seems as if the night was far from ending as the crowd ballooned inside. Another session of passionate praise began, as the intention of closing seems far from the brothers. They pulled songs which they had done together; including “Ketch A Fire” and “World Changer”.

Unfortunately it was time for the curtains to come down on a well enjoyed night, but it didn’t fail to leave a wonderful taste in the mouths of many about the album “Cornerstone”. Please go out and buy your copy of the album. Credits to Kevin “school bwoy” Thompson for his assistant.
