Take Off! Let’s play a game shall we? The “Time Travel Game!” Come with me as we go back in time. There was no gathering of folks in the wee hours of the morning to celebrate the New Year in a time of praise and thanks to God - right after watch night service! But wait! You’re asking if that can even work? Aren’t you weak, hungry and sleepy? Which crazy set of people would do that? Crazy or not this is the approach that the Jamaica Youth for Christ (JYFC) - the same ministry partly responsible for several of Jamaica’s well known preachers including Errol Rattray - has and still undertakes every year on January 1. How it began! The highly anticipated festival, which teens, young adults and even the elderly have been attending since it began over two decades ago, is a staple for YFC as it not only refreshes the occupants but serves as a fundraiser aiding the ministry’s purpose, which is to spread the Word of God to the youth in their natural and arguably most influential environment -the school; simultaneously unearthing new talent...
Genesis Festival 2010 The Movement behind the Music Take Off! The highly anticipated festival, which teens, young adults and even the elderly have been attending since it began over two decades ago, is a staple for YFC as it not only refreshes the occupants but serves as a fundraiser aiding the ministry’s purpose, which is to spread the Word of God to the youth in their natural and arguably most influential environment -the school; simultaneously unearthing new talent and opportunities for youth to glorify God. Through this main conduit YFC is “Geared to the times, Anchored to the rock”, bringing forth a modern and most appealing medium of the Word, even amidst rivaling lewd music and outrageous fashion trends. The festival, which traces its roots to the Karram Speid Auditorium at Merl Grove High in 1986 with then special minister Alvin Slaughter, had sought to initially usher in a new generation at its 40th Anniversary (seeing as though 40 marks a new generation), with something bold, different and crazy enough to work. Guess what? It did! With thousands of people flocking to the main event in Kingston, so much so that it was even broadcast live via the internet and locals as well as visitors jamming phone lines to get tickets, I’d say Genesis is one hot ticket. But this was nothing new by the way, the fact is that at the premier staging persons had to be turned back due to overcrowding and it ran like a well oiled machine”. I bet even George Forbes, the man responsible for the “Genesis’ of JYFC, is grinning from ear to ear where he is right now. What does the Future hold? It was his burden for Youth, the emptiness and void they felt after WWII (World War II) that drove him, with God’s power as his resource, to begin YFC- an International, Inter-Church Christian movement which seeks to win youth to Christ and to disciple them, not for the movement itself solely, but more importantly for the church where they can have influence, skills and training useful for their communities and the world. Fast Forward to 2010! YFC will host its “Celebrate Jamaica Day” with a most interesting line up in music, food and information too good to pass up! Trust me when I say you get a deal with Genesis 2010, and the concert segment is not confined to Kingston, but also in Montego Bay and Mandeville, so YOU can be part of the action. Tickets are already on sale, so don’t miss out. Don’t know what to do this New Year’s Day, why not take a Bite of Genesis 2010? While you’re there check out the notably modern and dangerously hip launching of their T.A.G (The Anointed Generation) with designs that will NOT soon be out of style- its SCREAMS Christian fashion.
