A New Beginning! E-mail

A few days ago was Christmas Day. A few days from now will be New Years Day. We are at that time of the year when traditionally people would begin to make grand pledges for the New Year. Some will make promises to quit fornicating or start going to church or to make a life-changing decision. But as sure as the times we are living in changes, some things never change.

For some, the more things change the more they remain the same. They replace one sin with another and in the end are no better off. A man might vow to stop smoking cigarettes, only to take up gambling or drinking as a habit. The sinful lifestyle is a cycle that never changes, but Christ came to set us free.

“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” [St. John 10: 10b] is the promise God made to all who would rest in Him. To those who are seeking a new beginning He promises hope and a future, to deliver them from their sins and set them free from their varying prisons of addiction. [St. Luke 4: 17-19]. Jesus promises more than a New Year’s Resolution, He promises a new way of life, eternal life.

In Jesus Christ there is purpose and meaning to life and living. The ills of this world takes not His brethren by surprise, where they are left in despair and without hope. He promises peace and joy to those who have accepted Him: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” [St. John 14: 27]. Jesus forgives the repentant sinner, gives him joy for today, hope for the future and eternal salvation when He appears with His angels at the End of Days. [Psalm 103: 12, St. John 17: 13, I Peter 1: 1-5, I Thessalonians 4: 13-18].

It is good to make good plans for the future and strive to become a better person, but if you seek to do this on your own you will not be pleasing to God and all your hard work will be of little or no lasting value. But if you are secure in the hands of your Maker He will be for you a Friend and a Brother who will guide you and make your life worth living. Jesus can solve all that puzzles your mind and destroy the sins which plague your life. If you are seeking a change, seek Him who can bring lasting change, Jesus Christ. Make it your resolve to praise Him!

Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise His holy name. Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits— who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. The LORD works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. He made known His ways to Moses, His deeds to the people of Israel: The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbour His anger forever; He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear Him; as far as the East is from the West, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him; for He knows how we are formed, He remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear Him, and His righteousness with their children’s children— with those who keep His covenant and remember to obey His precepts. The LORD has established His throne in heaven, and His Kingdom rules over all. Praise the LORD, you His angels, you mighty ones who do His bidding, who obey his Word. Praise the LORD, all His heavenly hosts, you His servants who do His will. Praise the LORD, all His works everywhere in His dominion. Praise the LORD, O my soul.
Psalm 103
