If I say, “The wages of sin is…” what would you say?
“Death” right? Yes, and you’d be right on point. This is taken from
Romans 6: 23a, and it is one of the most popular verses in the Bible.
This ‘death’ is usually taken in its literal terms, that sinners will
be separated from Jesus Christ forever. This is true, without God’s
forgiveness we will die, being eternally condemned by God. [2
Thessalonians 1:9].
But in this life sin still brings death. Because of sin we naturally die, and it brings a lot suffering. Today the world is in a sad state of affair. The fabric of justice has been unwoven, and the rich becomes richer and the poor, poorer. Babies are sacrificed to cover up fornication, adultery and to ensure that goals and dreams are recognized. Millions are walking around with the HIV virus in their veins, all because of infidelity.
Mankind is working for his wage and he is indeed earning. All that he has sown he is reaping. The image of sex and sexuality has been tarnished and men are walking around in public spaces almost naked. Sin makes a man wants to be a woman and makes a woman want to be a man. Sin brings strife between families and communities and nations. It as if we are sin’s pottery and it is polishing us, killing us, making us live death.
But just as sin has its wages, so does grace. Romans 6: 23 states that “...the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” In this life sin brings death, but Jesus Christ not only gives eternal life when we die, but He gives us abundant life on this earth. By His Spirit we can live. We can be honest to man and ourselves, be faithful to God and man, learn to trust and hope. We can actually enjoy life. We can live unto God, because we are aware that the pleasures of sin last only for a moment [Hebrews 11: 25]. As a Child of God it feels good to know that He has purged my “conscience from dead works to serve the living God.” [Hebrews 9: 14]. I can live. I can be happy. I have joy. Lack of perfection causes me to suffer still, but this will not last forever. God gives comfort, and I am not a fool to believe in His promises. The wages of sin is death, but God gives life. We cannot work for life, it is a gift of God, but sin causes us to work for death. Seek life and live. God bless you. Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship Him as God or even give Him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles. So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen. That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.
