God.
Who is God? Where is God? Is He even real? If every design has a
designer, then who designed God? Is God relevant today?! The first four
questions are asked by people. People ask these questions with their
lips, albeit some without any interest for an answer. But the fifth
question about the relevance of God is asked by the times we are living
in. Many accept God as Creator, but there is no development in their
personal lives, only degeneration.
The Bible has told us about the wonderful work of God to redeem mankind from sin. Even before the creation God the Father prepared a way to rescue sinners from the power of sin. He sought to do this by giving His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins and shed His blood for our cleansing. He then gives to those who receive the work of His Son the Holy Spirit to ‘seal’ them as His, as they await their redemption at the visible return of God the Son. [Ephesians 1]. It is a very telling story; on the surface somewhat mythical on the one hand, somewhat cruel on the other. It’s all fantastic (though not a fantasy), with God opting to die for undeserving sinners and giving them a chance to live life to the full. But it could also be said to be cruel: Why must God wait for mankind to get lost before seeking to find him? Why not prevent the sin in the first place, right? But “…who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct Him?” [I Corinthians 2:16]. You? Me? God is! A sufficient response? Could one be given? But God is God and no description could adequately fit Him. It is not enough to say, “God is wonderful, powerful, and all-knowing.” Of a fact He is all these things, but also He is so much more. The best I could muster is “God is God” and “God is Love”. God being God is mighty, able to not just kill the physical body, but He also has the power and authority to condemn the soul. [St. Luke 12:4-5]. But this same God also loves us to tend to us at our point of weakness, when we had nothing of value to offer Him, nothing to appease His wrath. [Romans 5:6]. God dying for us?! “Too good to be true,” says the world, “it’s all mythical!” Their determination is to serve a GOD, if such a one exists, who will conform to their lifestyle and fit into their worldview of what ‘God’ should be. He should be kind, caring, considerate and understanding, just as a best friend would. But God has been relegated to irrelevance in the lives of many today because He sits in judgment of their riotous lifestyles. So God is brought low because of His standard and man is exalted and celebrated for his ‘progressive’ strides and proud achievements. To esteem the One who couldn’t ‘save Himself from the cross’ [St. Matthew 27:40-43] is recklessness, simply irrational. To believe such as thing, they say, is foolish and those who believe the gospel are delusional. Are Christians delusional? “And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of His mouth and destroy by the splendour of His coming. The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.” [II Thessalonians 2:8-12]. The god of this world will lead astray those who refuse to love God and serve Him wholeheartedly. Christians delusional? No! God irrelevant? No! Take heed to the glorious gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ! Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the Word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. II Corinthians 4:1-7 Contributed by: Khimani Williams
