I Fed One Project 2009 Review
By Roxanne Ferron
Homeless Being Fed on Christmas Day December 25th 2009, the day when many considered being around love ones and families, was spent differently by over 140 persons who decided to volunteered at the annual “I Fed One Project” initiated by Spurr Music Empire, Fruitful Tree Ministries and Shekinah Ministries. The Devon House National Heritage Site in St. Andrew was the chosen meeting point and although closed to the public, was filled at the front Gazebos with volunteers clad in Jeans and white tops along with six (6) JUTC buses. It was confirmed by event co-coordinators Wendell Lawrence, Director of Spurr Music Empire and Mark Johnson, Director of Fruitful Tree Ministries that the attendance this year’s project was two (2) times more than the previous year which was a pleasant surprise. Sponsors were The Jamaica Pegasus, Flow, Altamont Court and individuals who donated cooked meals, cash and shopping items. The cash donation amassed to a total of $400,000 which allowed the ministries to distribute an attractive menu of fry chicken, ham, fish fillet, rice and peas, vegetable salad, pasta, fruit cake, sorrel, fruit drink and water. Although scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. it never got going until 1pm. Six groups with team leaders were created with the assigned destination for food distribution to the homeless. These destinations were: Papine, Barbican Square, New Kingston, Cross Roads, Half Way Tree, Heroes Circle, Friendship Gully, Three Miles, Six Miles, Manor Park and Constant Spring. The Experiences One member of the team that traveled to Spanish Town gave us her experience. She reported that the streets were initially few in numbers with the homeless. Nevertheless the Spanish Town team’s experience was priceless and was encouraged more by the smiles and expressions on the faces of both males and females after receiving the meals. The team got an overwhelming send off from those who were fed. However, it was explained that that many homeless people had to be in “hiding” as they are fearful of being physically and otherwise abused by other people. The team that journeyed to the nearby New Kingston to Cross Roads experienced an overly thankful homeless female who jumped and hugged one of the volunteer. At one point, she even prevented him from entering the bus in an effort to demonstrate her thankfulness. Another recipient started to cry after receiving a meal. The team that was in Half Way Tree had an out pouring of people of all ages gathering at the bus to collect a meal. The day ended with all groups meeting at Devon House for prayer and a word of thanks from the event coordinators. This event was surely a perfect reminder of the true meaning of the season. Jesus Himself gave His life for our sins when he came to earth.
